Een Brave Burger was mijn antwoord. Met een aantal toevallige mensen zat ik vrijdag jl toevallig rond een kampvuur op het BovenIJfestival en zoals vaker gaat het dan wel eens over politiek. Wat maakt iemand nu een D66-er en wat is het verschil met bijvoorbeeld een GroenLinkser werd mij gevraagd.
Brave burgers, er is niets mis mee. Twee jaar lang organiseerde ik het D-Café in Amsterdam met bijbehorend Nieuwe-Leden-Inloop. Tientallen, honderden nieuwe leden heb ik in die jaren binnen zien komen. Over het algemeen brave burgers. Verder zijn ze blank, hoger-opgeleid, man en tussen de 25-40 jaar. En, en dat was het opmerkelijke, bij z0′n eerst bijeenkomst, al gekleed in wat ik het D66-uniform noem. Dus niet geconformeerd aan de groep, maar authentiek zo zijn. Authentiek braaf. Andere verenigingen hebben ook een uniform. Bij de VVD is dat een pak of parelketting. Bij GroenLinks sandalen en een linnen tasje en bij de SP een verwassen t-shirt. Bij D66 is dat uniform netjes, maar niet te formeel. Braaf; een overhemd, colbert met spijkerbroek. De hipsters dragen daaronder sneakers, de meer traditionelen hebben mooie, gepoetste, leren schoenen, bruin.
Opvallend dat Amsterdam, veruit de grootste afdeling van het land, weinig in de melk te brokkelen heeft in het landelijke D66-gebeuren. Want Amsterdam is natuurlijk niet braaf genoeg. Grote bekken en kapsones. Nee, bij D66 zijn het de oud-Hollandse stadjes die het voor het zeggen hebben. Onze Ingrid, hoofd-akela, is wethouder te ‘s-Gravenhage. Haar voorganger, ex-senator en tegenwoordig TK-lid Gerard Schouw deed dat in Dordrecht. En voormalig partijbureaubaas Robert Strijk doet het in Leiden. Daar begon natuurlijk ook de politieke carriere van Alexander Pechtold. Voordat hij burgervader werd in Wageningen. Een keurige plaats ook, netjes met eigen universiteit. En zelfs Roger van Boxtel, notabene bobo bij Ajax, woont in Gorinchem.
Brave burgers dus, en een beetje provinciaals. En ik ben er ook zo één.
