Twee weken geleden was ik in Rome, voor het eerst. Rome, de stad van oude stenen en kerken; de stad van goede espresso op iedere hoek van de straat en kerken; de stad van lekker eten, scooters en kerken.
Als dorpspoliticus kijk je toch soms even met andere ogen naar zo’n echte wereldstad. En dan vallen een paar dingen op. Het verkeer helemaal niet zo hectisch als de vooroordelen je vertellen. Maar vooral een stuk praktischer; als het groen is dan geven we gas. En in één beurt gaat iedereen over. Niet van dat getrut wat we in Amsterdam kennen. Van o ja hij is groen; nu in zijn één zetten, langzaam op laten komen en ja daar gaan we. Na drie auto’s is het weer rood. In Rome geen getrut maar doorrijden, en doe je dat niet dan staat er wel een agentje te fluiten dat je vooral moet opschieten en doorrijden.
Ook goed en beter dan hier geregeld is het openbaar vervoer. Bussen, trams en metro rijden niet op tijd, maar gewoon heel vaak. Waar je in Amsterdam in de spits rustig een kwartier mag wachten op een metro of 20 minuten op de tram, komt in Rome binnen 5 minuten de volgende voorrijden. En dan wederom geen getrut met in en uitstappen; van met zn allen langs de chauffeur en vooral niet doorlopen, maar alle deuren open, iedereen erin doorschuiven en gas erop. De metro’s zijn ook opvallend schoon en fris. Lekker de airco aan ipv de verwarming zoals de GVB graag de hele zomer doet (gek genoeg, in de winter kan die verwarming wel uit ).
Kortom, ondanks 10 jaar Berlusconi en alle andere vooroordelen die we willen eens hebben nog steeds nog steeds een bron van beschaving.
