Koningin Beatrix heeft in haar jaarlijkse kersttoespraak kritiek geuit op digitale, sociale netwerken als Hyves, Twitter etc. Het zou ons vervreemden van elkaar doordat we ons veschuilen achter schermen en mobieltjes. Het ‘nabuurschap’ – zoals we dat vroeger kenden – is verdwenen, aldus Beatrix, en we weten niet meer wie onze buren zijn. Het is maar de vraag hoe je er zelf mee omgaat, denk ik dan… Bij mij thuis is het zeker niet verdwenen.
Ik weet niet of u de toespraak ook gezien heeft, maar in de verste verte van het paleis was geen buur te bekennen. Wat wel te bekennen was, was een heel hoog hek dat zijn werk goed gedaan heeft want de voordelen van de digitalisering zijn niet tot paleis Noordeinde doorgedrongen. De Koningin maakte de fout om het medium de schuld te geven van een ‘probleem’ (individualisering), in plaats van te analyseren wat de werkelijke oorzaak is. Voor iemand die nog nooit een e-mail gestuurd heeft, kan zij blijkbaar goed de gevolgen inzien van de digitale sociale netwerken. Vreemd en niet ‘des staatshoofds’.
De toespraak van Beatrix was dan ook buitengewoon eenzijdig. Ik noem graag waarom ik dat vindt: ten eerste omdat zij niet ziet dat reeds nu al door vele instanties en overheden (Zuid-Holland nog niet overigens) twitter gebruikt wordt om informatie te verspreiden aan doelgroepen, die dat anders niet zouden bereiken. Ten tweede leidt twitter tot meer contact tussen personen die dat zonder, niet zouden hebben. Ook hier worden meer mensen bereikt die zonder twitter niet bereikt zouden worden. En daarbij; wanneer iemand geen behoefte heeft aan die informatie van deze persoon, kun je je er voor kiezen deze niet te volgen of zelfs te blokkeren. Ten derde, heeft de Koningin de ontwikkelingen in Iran bijvoorbeeld de laatste dagen gevolgd? Via twitter – omdat de Iraanse overheid buitenlandse media verboden heeft – is de rest van de wereld geinformeerd over wat er zoal gebeurd in Iran. Kortom: zonder twitter hadden we dat nooit geweten! En ongetijfeld zijn er nog meer voordelen te bekennen.
Wat mij betreft komt er voor Koningin Beatrix een twittercursus. Op deze manier kan zij zien welke voordelen digitale netwerken hebben. Dan zal zij ook kunnen zien dat twitter, hyves niet de oorzaak zijn van het verloren gewaande nabuurschap.
