Deze zomer zijn mijn vriendin en ik op fietsvakantie geweest in (Noord-)Italië. Zo hebben wij bijvoorbeeld gefietst door de provincies Verona, Trentino, Friuli-Venezia-Gulia en tenslotte Toskane.
Veel Italiaanse provincies, zoals Trentino, hebben het afgelopen decennium hard gewerkt om hun provincies voor de recreatieve fietser aantrekkelijker te maken. En dat is gelukt!
Zo liggen er nu schitterende, vrijliggende fietspaden door verschillende valleien zoals in de Val di Sole, Val Sugana etc. In deze laatste vallei fiets je door velden met wijnranken (langs het fietspad met borden met welke druifsoort de fietser hier te maken heeft) en oleanders, langs de rivier de Brenta en aan weerszijden geniet je van ruige bergkammen. Dit soort routes zijn ook voor niet-berggeiten zoals wij Nederlanders, prima te doen.
De provincie Trentino heeft, om de fietspaden aantrekkelijker te maken verschillende routes op een aparte site geplaatst waar ze vaak ook als GPS-route te downloaden zijn. Ook zijn ze bij elke lokale VVV gratis af te halen. Langs de paden zelf staan watertappunten, betrouwbare wegbewijzering (op zich al een unicum in Italië!) en er zijn veel zogeheten ‘bicigrills’ te vinden waar je een hapje en een drankje kunt kopen en het op terras kunt zitten. Om het helemaal af te ronden, kan je je fiets voor slechts € 1,= in de provinciale treinen.
Italianen zouden echter geen Italianen zijn als het niet allemaal zo goed doordacht is als het op het eerste gezicht lijkt. Wat aardige voorbeelden:
1) De meeste routes zijn namelijk bedoeld voor wielrenners en mountainbikers, maar voor hybridefietsen met bepakking zijn sommige stukken veel te steil. Soms dus simpelweg lopen geblazen.
2) Daarnaast zijn veel fietspaden op zichzelf staand. Het vormt geen geheel van een aaneengesloten routes. Door een echt netwerk te maken, zoals we dat in Nederland steeds vaker hebben, zou het nog aantrekkelijker worden.
3) Daarnaast zijn langs veel van de meest schitterende fietsroutes geen overnachtingsmogelijkheden te vinden. Ja, wel veel 5-sterrenhotels, maar die liggen dan weer 5 km bergopwaarts, iets wat je als fietser met bepakking liever niet doet, zeker niet als je de volgende morgen gewoon weer naar beneden kan.
4) Tenslotte hetgeen wat ons bevreemdde was dat je in veel treinen makkelijk en goedkoop je fiets mee kan nemen, maar je vervolgens niet met je fiets het perron op of af komt. Grote stations als Verona, Venetië Mestre of Pisa kennen namelijk het fenomeen lift niet! Je staat dan toch met je fiets vol bagage en je mond vol tanden als je 10 perrons verder moet zijn… In de mode- en miljoenenstad Milaan bleek het station na een half uur zoeken toch een klein goederenliftje te hebben in de wachtkamer, maar daar mocht je niet in met de fiets, zo maakten wij op uit de druk pratende en gebarenmakende wachtkameropzichter. Uiteindelijk bleek het ‘problemo’ waar deze man naar verwees hijzelf te zijn want hij zag uiteindelijk ook in dat wij anders simpelweg het station niet uit kwamen met onze fietsen. Om ons nou drie weken op station Milaan Centraal te laten bivakkeren vond ook deze man wel wat ver gaan…. Het Italiaanse temperament is dus een factor waar je als fietsvakantieganger mee rekening te houden hebt in Italië!
